QUALITY IN UPPER ENDOSCOPY

Unlike with Colonoscopy where quality criteria are well validated, for Upper Endoscopy criteria are less well established and many suggested “process measures” which while necessary are paperwork related and not centrally related to the patient’s health. There is a consensus however, that time spent doing the exam is important – this seems logical since how well one examines the lining looking for cancer or other abnormalities depends on spending adequate time doing it.

Below are two tables summarizing Position statement commissioned by the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) in 2017. (Upper Endoscopy is also called Esophago-Gastro-Duodenoscopy - EGD in the USA and OGD - for Oesophago-Gastro-Duodenoscopy in the UK).
